ABOUT POPPY: Dear art lovers, allow me to add a few more words. It is my wish for the blossom to pass on to you a question about poppy, a question put to me by Mathias Énard’s 2015 Goncourt award-winning novel, which was recently published in Suzana Koncut’s Slovene translation.
On a sleepless night, Viennese musicologist Franz Ritter recounts his travels to Istanbul, Aleppo, Palmira, Damascus, and Tehran. He freely blends memories of diverse places and persons, literary and musical references from different lives, pouring them all into a single life. Is the “self” a mere collage of fragments collected across various lives? Who is the inaccessible Sarah, Franz’s allegedly unrequited love? Is she a doll comprising of a collage of glued-together sentences, a woman, a memory? Perchance a museum of private fantasies giving voice to never-played melodies, melodies so unlike the decree of mandatory verses? Now I pass my question to you, about poppy, this flower of white and lines, this artery linking the Near East and the West. Flower petals on one side and roots on the other, its stem links all that which is relegated into the unconscious, all which pushes and suppresses, all which is visible or shifting, all which causes bloodshed. I pass the poppy on to you, observe it carefully, do not drown in its intoxication. Do not cling to what you find, but do not discard it either.
