Alenka Sottler about her work:
Dear art lover,
Let me dedicate a few words to you. I would like this blossom to raise a question about a poppy to you, the way the Goncourt award winning novel by Mathias Énard, Compass, questioned me.
One restless night, a Viennese musicologist Franz Ritter describes his journeys to Istanbul, Aleppo, Palmyra, Damascus, Tehran. The author of the book is freely mingling memories of various places and people, literary and musical quotations and fragments of different lives. He merges all of the above into a single life.
Is »I« a collage of fragments of different lives and places? Who is the inaccessible Sarah, whomFranz supposedly secretly loves: a doll made out of collages from sentences, a woman, a memory? Maybe a museum of private fantasies, where never before heard melodies, different to a dictation ofcommanded poems are playing?
Now, I'm handing a question about a poppy to you, a question about a flower, made out of whiteness and lines, a vein, which connects the Middle East with the West – blossoms on one side and roots on the other. A stem is connecting everything, which is pushed away in the unknown, and everything, which is suppressing and pushing away, which is visible and unstable, which is causing the blood to flow.
I'm handing a poppy to you, watch it closely, don't drown in stupor. Don't hold on to it, but don't discard anything you might see either.
